Borderlands 2: Mr Torgue's Campaign Of Carnage Review | Video ...

Genre: First Person Shooter/Role Playing Game

Platform: Playstation 3

Developer: Gearbox

Publisher: 2K Games

Released: November 20th 2012

Borderlands 2 is definitely one of the best games of the current gaming generation: it does everything the first Borderland did and improves greatly on the formula with a lot of tweakings here and there. If you already completed the game and the DLC packs already released then it?s time to show everyone how badass you can be by entering Mr Torgue?s arena in the third DLC for the game, Mr Torgue?s Campaign Of Carnage.

The thrills of the competition

Just like the Mad Moxxi?s Underdrome Riot DLC of the first Borderlands game, the Campaign of Carnage adds a violent tournament to the world of Borderlands 2 but unlike the first game, there?s some plot elements included: while? fighting in Mr Torgue?s arena to find out who?s the most BADASS on Pandora, you?ll meet all the other contestants, each with his own trademark battle style, and a few more characters like Piston, the come back of Borderlands? Mad Moxxi and Tiny Tina from the main game.
If you ever played the game No More Heroes, then the game?s flow will look awfully familiar: fight until you reach the top by killing persons you met just a few moments before after a wild search, rinse and repeat until you reach the top. And in the middle of all of this you?ll have to do a fair share of the usual Bordelands 2 quests.

That was a breeze? Or maybe not

Mr Torgue?s arena is split into different areas, each one with main quests, a few sub quests and a boss battle: unfortunately, while main quests are quite engaging, fast and exciting, subquests are somewhat lacking since they?re focused on shooting and killing. I know that in the Captain Scarlett DLC we were given more exploration sequences but still it would have improved the experience by offering something else than the ?Go from here to there shooting everyone? kind of quests.
From the day it was announced, it?s been said that Mr Tongue?s DLC would feature some high level areas and an overall higher difficulty level but that?s not entirely true: I found the game to be unbalanced in this regard. I literally had no problem fighting most of the bosses and some of them were even way to easy but, once I was at the fight to reach the final ranking, I was defeated multiple times: I was completely unprepared because it was totally unexepected since all fights up to this point were a breeze. And high level milionairs can have it though as much as all the other players thanks to a new mechanic which prevents veterans from buying the new best weapons available without playing through the DLC: the weapons will be progressively available for purchase as you progress to the story. It?s really a nice touch and it makes even more strange that the final parts of the DLC are so though compared to the earlier segments.

The most BADASS of all

What I really liked in the game are the characters: Mr Torgue spares no effort in making himself instantly likeable. Being a WWE announcer, he?s completely over the top with his CAPITALIZE EVERYTHING attitude and expletive language. Mad Moxxi and Tiny Tina?s interactions are fun as well and the new character Piston is likeable as well. Overall the story is very entertaining and my only gripe is that it could have been flashed out more: considering the first game arena DLC lack of story we probably shouldn?t complain too much about this.

Final Thoughts

Mr Torgue?s Campaign of Carnage was overall a fun ride. Lasting around 5-6 hours, you get exactly what you expect: an arena with boss battles and a few quests. From a gameplay point of view it?s the Borderlands we all love, so no problems here: my only gripes were with the repetitive subquests and the sudden difficulty spikes. If you loved Borderlands 2 you must get this new DLC, if you feel kinda burned out on the game I recommend waiting a bit before getting this DLC: all the shooting included may worsen you Borderlands sickness.

PROS

  • Entertaining story and characters
  • New weapons
  • More Borderlands 2 gameplay

CONS

  • Unbalanced difficulty curve
  • Too short
  • Repetitive Subquests

Rating:????????????

7.5 out of 10
